Transit Design Options by Corridor Segments

The areas of Springfield included in the Main-McVay Transit Study are divided into two corridor segments:

  • Main Street from the Springfield Station in Downtown to the Thurston Station at Main Street and Bob Straub Parkway; and
  • McVay Highway from Franklin Boulevard to Lane Community College.

Options by Corridor Segments

In spring 2016, the Governance Team advanced a range of transportation options for further study on each segment of the corridor. These options are described below, along with an example, also known as renderings, of how each Main Street option could generally look if selected as the locally preferred solution.

Main Street Segment

  • No-Change Option – Continue the existing Route #11 bus service with no major changes. No changes to existing service connections, lane placement, routing, end of line, or station locations. No additional transportation safety improvements would be implemented.

No-Change Option

  • Bus Rapid Transit (BRT) Option, also known as EmX – Could extend the existing EmX service from the Springfield Station in Downtown to the Thurston Station at Main Street and Bob Straub Parkway. Different street configuration options include shared bus and automobile travel lanes as well as transit-only, dedicated transit lanes. This option would include transportation safety improvements for all street users, including raised median, roundabout intersections at the main intersections, separated bicycle facilities, planter buffer strips, and sidewalks.

Mixed-Traffic Lane Configuration (east of 21st on Main St): EmX buses travel in lanes shared with automobiles and trucks.

Two different Mixed-Traffic options are being considered: one with the bus running in the outside lane and one with the bus running in the inside lane. The outside lane is shown below.

Median Transit Lane Configuration (east of 21st on Main St): EmX buses travel in dedicated, transit-only lanes. Update – At the May 26, 2016 Governance Team meeting this design option was removed from the list of options under consideration.

The Springfield Station to 21st St portion of the corridor is considering the following alignment options.

South A Street Two-Way Alignment: Update – At the June 21, 2016 Governance Team meeting this design option was preferred from the list of options under consideration.

McVay Highway Segment

  • No-Change Option – Continue existing Route #85 bus service with no major changes. No changes to existing service connections, lane placement, routing, end of line or station locations. No additional transportation safety improvements would be implemented.
  • Enhanced Corridor Option – Could include features to improve reliability, reduce transit travel times, and increase passenger comfort. These features include queue jumps, which are lanes that allow the bus to “jump” ahead of other traffic at intersections. Enhanced Corridors include frequent transit service and stop amenities, such as shelters. Buses generally share lanes with other vehicles. New facilities could be constructed along with Enhanced Corridor investments to make walking, biking, and using mobility devices safer and more convenient.
